How to be a pro Fisherman

Today is the day that I’m posting my
first official article for SDA. This day also is the day that I am going to
make one of my own favorite decks public by making this article for you guys.
As the title itself might indicate the deck I’m talking about at least contains
some Fish monsters since if not it would be hard to become a pro fisherman am I
wrong?, anyway enough of this small talk and let’s get down to business.

Before I introduce you to the entire deck
itself I will go over the engine(s) I have installed in the deck so that you
can get a small taste of how I think during the times when I make a new deck
for myself or others for that matter.
The main engine is:

Genex Undine:

“When this card is Normal Summoned, you can send 1 WATER monster
from your Deck
to your Graveyard
to add 1 "Genex Controller" from your Deck to
your hand.”

You might ask yourself; “ Why Genex
Undine? “, the answer to that is actually not hard to understand if I may say so
myself. Genex Undine’s effect dumps a water monster from deck to the grave
without losing card advantage in the process since I get to search out a Genex
Controller from my deck. This directly means my deck is thinned by 2 while my
hand lose is 0 while also creating the start of my strategy. So I could make
the following bold statement; “ Genex Undine is highly essential for this
deck”. At this time I believe I hear
some people say; “ Ok I get that Genex Undine serves a goal but wouldn’t it be
a pity to draw it mid-game or late-game? “. The answer is yes, it would be a
shame, since if I don’t have it in the first 3 turns it usually means I’m going
to crumble down in the duel but to prevent that from happening I run 3 copies
of it. For those that are not familiar with the ratio calculations yet here it
is:

We have 40 cards in the deck to make
sure we have the highest possible rate of getting it in our opening hand.

nCr(copies of card, # in starting
hand) x nCr((cards in deck - copies of card), (cards being drawn - # in
starting hand))

nCr(3,1) x nCr(40-3,6-1) + nCr(3,2) x nCr(40-3,6-2) +
nCr(3,3) x nCr(40-3,6-3) = 1,513,596

That determines the possibility of drawing one, two, or three copies of the
card in your starting hand. So, we just take that and divide by the total
number of hands to get:
1,513,596 / 3,383,380 = 0.447 or 44.7%

If this
fails we still have another engine to support the Genex engine and that engine
would be Pot of Duality. The card itself isn’t a real engine although it does
the same job as some engines do therefore I hold the opinion of it being an
engine for the deck. As we all know Pot
of Duality lets the player that activates it see the top 3 cards of his or her
deck and is able to add one of those directly to his or her hand. If you keep
in mind the ratio calculation above you would notice that the cards being drawn
is going up and therefore the chances of having to pick out a Genex Undine. And
if it so happens to be that I can pick out a Genex Undine there is nothing
different about my opening move then if I would have had a Genex Undine from
the start. Sure people might already
know the targets that I wish to dump to my grave from the deck but I also hear
people think; “ What are your targets? “ so for those people here are my
targets listed in order:

·
Treeborn Frog

·
Fishborg Blaster

·
Superancient Deepsea King
Coelacanth

Treeborn
Frog and Fishborg Blaster combined are another important asset for the deck,
since they combination of having these in my graveyard allows me to do the
following things:

·
Ditch a dead card from my
hand to the graveyard for Fishborg Blaster’s effect

·
Having an instant 2 tribute fodders for Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth

·
The option to synchro summon
Formula Synchron every turn and getting my hand size back ( since I draw a
fresh card for the card I ditched for Fishborg Blaster’s effect. )

·
2 defending monsters

With options like I mentioned above
every turn holds options to setup the big plays or just do the big plays. Since
while you have Treeborn Frog and Fishborg Blaster in the graveyard together you
have this setup every single turn for you to abuse so why not do it. Of course
there is a limit to the Formula Synchrons we are allowed to have in our extra
deck, but as so many cards are easily recyclable we are able to fully recycle
all our Formula’s with one of my favorite cards in the game; Pot of Avarice.
With mentioning this card I come to my last sub-engine, since this card not only
recycles the cards from my graveyard back to the deck or extra deck it also
lets me draw 2 cards for an easy +1. The more important part of its function in
the deck is being able to get back all my fish tuners which I might have
ditched to the grave for my Fishborg Blaster’s effect or after a previous big move. With my engines
being explained I wish to take a closer look at Superancient Deepsea King
Coelacanth since it holds a great weakness but yet that is also part of his
strength.

Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth:

How to be a pro Fisherman 300pxsuperancientdeepse

“Once
per turn, you can discard
1 card to Special Summon as many Level 4 or lower Fish-Type monsters as
possible from your Deck. A monster Special
Summoned by this effect cannot declare an attack and its effect(s) is negated while on
the field.
If this card is targeted
by a Spell,
Trap,
or Effect Monster's effect, you can Tribute 1 other Fish-Type monster to negate the effect
and destroy
that card.”

This card alone makes sure I have so
many options in order to take over the control of the duel or just simply OTK
my opponent ( this is the reason why the deck is known well ). But I promised I
would mention his weakness which also is his strength. If we take a closer look
at its effect you could see the following:

“If this card is targeted by a Spell, Trap, or Effect
Monster's effect, you can Tribute 1 other Fish-Type
monster to negate
the effect and destroy
that card.”

This means if you have a different fish
monster to tribute this card is safe from all cards that target a card on the
field. Some example cards; Book of Moon, Icarus Attack and Gemini Spark. So to
avoid to get hit by one of those you could use your own Fishborg Blaster as a
fodder for Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth’s effect. But a card that must
be at least be hold into consideration while doing the big moves even if you go
under Cold wave would be Effect Veiler. But since the awesome effect of Superancient
Deepsea King Coelacanth Effect Veiler can just be a waste if you keep in mind
to have a fish type monster on your side of the field other than Superancient
Deepsea King Coelacanth when you wish to do the big move. As you also might
have noticed I keep referring to “ the big move” and I hear people asking;
“what the heck is your big move?”, well for those that do not see the options
of making a big move here are some examples of big moves which can you the
duel.

Example #1:

·
Activate Superancient Deepsea
King Coelacanth’s effect to summon 2 Oyster
Meister
and 2 Fishborg Blasters.

·
First use 1 Fishborg
Blaster
and 1 Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth
to Synchro summon 1 Red Dragon Archfiend.

·
Discard 1 Card to Special
summon 1 Fishborg Blaster from your graveyard.

·
Then Synchro summon 1 Armory Arm
using an Oyster Meister and a Fishborg
Blaster
. You get 1 Oyster Token.

·
Equip Red Dragon Archfiend with Armory Arm.

·
Discard 1 card to Special
summon 1 Fishborg Blaster from your graveyard again.

·
Synchro summon 1 more Armory Arm
using an Oyster Meister and a Fishborg
Blaster
. You get 1 more Oyster Token.
T

·
hen Synchro summon 1 Formula
Synchron
using an Oyster Token and a Fishborg
Blaster
. Draw 1 card.

·
Then Discard 1 card to special
summon 1 Fishborg Blaster from the graveyard. Then
Synchro summon 1 more Formula Synchron using an Oyster Token
and a Fishborg Blaster.

·
Now you have 2 tuners and a Red Dragon Archfiend. Synchro for your Red Nova
Dragon
and equip it with that last Armory Arm
for an extra kick.

·
There will also be the 4 tuners
you just used in the graveyard for an added 2000 ATK points bring him to at least
6500 attack points. Now attack a monster with 1500 attack points or more for
the win.

Example #2:

·
Activate Superancient Deepsea
King Coelacanth’s effect to summon 2 Oyster
Meister
and 2 Fishborg Blasters.

·
Synchro 1 Fishborg Blaster with
the Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth to make Colossal Fighter.

·
Then you synchro with the other
Fishborg Blaster and 1 Oyster Meister for Armory Arm. You get a token from
Oyster Meister.

·
Equip Armory arm to an
opponent’s monster that holds 1900 attack points or more. In case your opponent
doesn’t have a monster that fits our requirement you go 1 step further.

·
You active your Fishborg
Blaster’s effect by discarding a random card .

·
You synchro with your 2nd
Oyster Meister and your newly summoned Fishborg Blaster for another Armory Arm.

·
You also equip this armory to
your opponents monster that holds your other Armory Arm as an equip card.

·
You enter your battle phase and
keep swinging into the equipped monster until you burn his life points to 0
with the effect of Armory Arm.

These sort of big moves are the ones I
am for when I use this deck, and I think or rather believe that this is the
true power of the deck concept Fish OTK. To have a consistent OTK move whether
it being with an Armory Arm +Colossal Fighter OTK or the Red Nova dragon OTK,
or just simple by making your field look like Superancient Deepsea King
Coelacanth, Scrap Dragon, Stardust Dragon and an Oyster token.

So many people are asking themselves; “
Is he really relying on tribute summoning Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth
or to special summon it by Monster Reborn that much?”, the answer to that is
NO. Since with the once more awesome Genex engine in the deck comes a card that
combines so perfect with the deck idea that you just have to at least consider
it, of course I am talking about Symbols of Duty. Symbols of Duty effect lets me special summon
from either players graveyard. So not only do I have the option of going for my
Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth but also an ace monster which I managed to
kill from my opponents graveyard, this all at the low cost of tributing my
Genex Controller for the effect of Symbols of Duty. Apart from Symbols of Duty
there is monster called Phantom of Chaos which is just too easy to abuse with
monster effects like that of Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth.

The above mentioned ways to get
Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth’s effect are the most common although
there still lays within the effect of Light and Darkness Dragon.

Light and Darkness Dragon:

“This
card cannot be Special Summoned. While this card is face-up on the field,
its Attribute
is also treated as DARK.
When a Spell
or Trap
Card is activated,
or the effect of
an Effect Monster is activated, that
activation
is negated and
this card loses 500 ATK
and DEF. When this
card is destroyed
and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 monster
in your Graveyard.
Then destroy
all cards you control,
and Special
Summon that monster.”

In this particular case I’m focusing on
Light and Darkness Dragon’s 3rd effect; ” When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 monster
in your Graveyard.
Then destroy
all cards you control,
and Special
Summon that monster.”
This part of Light and Darkness
Dragon’s effect is the key to special summon Superancient Deepsea King
Coelacanth from my graveyard, since this part of Light and Darkness Dragon’s
effect also resolves at the following situations:

·
When he gets destroyed by
Solemn Warning

·
When he gets destroyed by
Solemn Judgment

·
When destroyed in hand by card
effects like Crush Card Virus

So even if my opponent has an immediate
answer to the summoning of Light and Darkness Dragon by activating his Solemn
Warning or Solemn Judgment I can still do a big move like I stated earlier in
this article. With all these options to get Superancient Deepsea King
Coelacanth’s effect and making a big move, the chances of winning a duel like
that is quite high.

With all the above explanations and
“tips” it is time to see the actual build I am presenting:

Total deck: 40

Monsters: 22

1x Light and Darkness Dragon

3x Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth

2x Royal Swamp Eel

2x Golden Flying Fish

2x Oyster Meister

3x Genex Undine

2x Fishborg Blaster

2x Treeborn Frog

2x Phantom of Chaos

3x Genex Controller

Spells: 16

1x Symbols of Duty

1x Monster Reborn

1x Dark Hole

1x Cold Wave

1x Giant Trunade

1x Foolish Burial

1x Mind Control

2x Mystical Space Typhoon

2x Pot of Duality

2x Enemy Controller

3x Pot of Avarice

Traps: 2

2x Spiritual Water Arts- Aoi

Extra deck: 15

3x Formula Synchron

2x Armory Arm

1x Ally of Justice Catastor

1x Brionac

1x Goyo Guardian

1x Black Rose Dragon

1x Colossal Fighter

1x Red Dragon Archfiend

1x Scrap Dragon

1x Stardust Dragon

1x Mist Wurm

1x Shooting Star Dragon

Now most people will notice 2 things:

1. I run 3 copies Genex Controllers

2. I only run 1 copy of Symbols of Duty

Genex Controller mostly found function
in this deck would be to discard him for the effect of Fishborg Blaster. Or to
use tune into an opponent’s monster taken with Mind Control or Enemy Controller
to nuke the field with Black Rose Dragon or to go for a Stardust Dragon to
assure my Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth doesn’t get destroyed by cards
like Torrential Tribute and Bottomless Trap Hole.

With that being said, I have reached the end of
my thoughts regarding this deck concept and this particular build. I hope you
all learned something, enjoyed reading this and holds more appreciation for
this deck concept and particular build.

Nice article. I have worked with a Fish OTK variant in the past, but i don't really like other WATER attribute monsters (except snowman eater :P)

good job and 300 Credits cashed.

sorry for the fail lay-out but when I copy paste my article onto SDA it get's like this, and I have spent like a half hour to make it look like it does on my Word document, but it gets strange codes and sort of weird stuff.

So if you can get passed the ugly look of it, you will find yourself enjoying a good article ( if i may say so myself ).

I've used this deck in the past, and I gotta say it worked really well.I used triple symbols of duty though and included 3 7 colored fish, because I found myself having symbols of duty and coleacanth far too often.I also used only 1 flying fish and 2 coleacanths since I always ended up with 2 of them in my hand for some odd reason.I believe triple POA is just too much, have you thought of Moray Of Greed? It worked pretty well for me
Great job with the article :)

Moray of greed is a usable card, but I dislike it to be honest. Since as explained in the actual article the chances of me having direct discard options are just overwhelming and because of that Moray becomes "useless".

I only run Duty for the soul reason if it fails it is a -2 for myself if not a -3 when my Deepsea King dies at the hands of Bottomless Trap Hole. So it's not the most reliable way to summon him or get his effect, that is also why the 2x PoC and LaDD come into place as stated in the actual article.

Still I appreciate it that you guys are tying to help out at the deck I used for the article.
